Long Islanders spent the day Friday putting their shovels and snowblowers to good use in the wake of the blizzard-like storm that swept across the area.

The storm dumped 8-12 inches on most parts of Nassau County. Slightly higher amounts were reported in Suffolk.

All the snow brought a great opportunity for Carle Place resident Erich Hilbig to get his snowblower into action, which was no easy feat. "You have to gas it up, get ready to go, make sure that it's started, belts are tight. Everything was good to go, and here we are," he said, in between his work sending puffs of snow soaring.

A few houses down, resident Tom Festa wasn't so lucky. His snowblower sat covered in a blanket of snow in his backyard. "I couldn't get it started, so it's good old shoveling," he said. Festa got some help from his wife at home, then went off to shovel the sidewalk in front of his business.

Most residents say the goal is to clear the snow away before it freezes and turns into immovable ice, and there are frigid temperatures in the forecast for the next few days.
