A Nassau County vet is giving an abused puppy from Mexico a second chance at life.
Five-month-old Leona was found in Mexico with her tail, nose and parts of both ears cut off. An animal rescue group found her and nursed her back to health, but Leona still needed reconstructive surgery on her nose.
The group called on the doctors at Long Island Veterinary Specialists in Plainview, who performed surgery yesterday to help Leona breathe through her nose again.
The surgery involved creating new nostrils and placing tubes that reconnected the puppy's nasal passages.
Leona is expected to make a full recovery and has already been adopted.
