A survey of opinions from 1,200 showed many are having a hard time living on Long Island.
The 2006 Long Island Index Report found many residents are finding it hard to make mortgage payments due the increase in taxes and the high cost of living. The majority surveyed, 55 percent, said they would rather pay for school taxes through their income tax instead of through property taxes.
Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy (D-Mineola) says government needs a better way to collect taxes from residents to make it fair for everyone.
