Long Island school districts eye bans on e-cigarette use on campuses
Many school districts across Long Island are expected to join a spreading movement to ban electronic cigarette use on their campuses.
A handful of districts, including Lynbrook, Jericho and Middle Country, have already banned e-cigarettes.
School officials say that e-cigarettes, which can be purchased online or at various gas stations, can be a gateway for tobacco use.
Jeffery Reynolds, the executive director of the Long Island Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependency, says students have also been masking drug usage though e-cigarettes by manipulating the devices.
Islip School District told News 12 it expects to ban e-cigarettes soon.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, e-cigarette use has been on the increase in New York state.
