A Wantagh native is gearing up to compete in the Tokyo Olympics diving competition for the first time.
Andrew Capobianco started diving at the Newbridge Park Pool in Bellmore.
The spins and twists of competitive diving have been a part of Capobianco’s life for the past 11 years.
“I'd say everyone in the sport of diving is a little bit of a daredevil and definitely an adrenaline junkie,” says Capobianco.
The diver's daredevil days began as a gymnast, earning a win in a Junior Olympic Championship.
On a class trip in 2010, he started flipping off the diving board at Newbridge Park Pool.
The park's diving coach spotted him and encouraged the young man to give the sport a try.
That year, he won their championship meet and his Olympic dreams began.
Capobianco’s parents say they remember it well, saying in part, “When it happened, I was like, 'Oh my God, Andrew is going to the Olympics.' It’s just amazing.”
