Sunni and Shiite Muslims gathered at a mosque in Westbury Saturday in a show of unity.
The group at the Islamic Center of Long Island condemned this week's attack on a Shiite mosque in Iraq. More than 130 people were killed in the attack that exacerbated tensions between Sunni and Shiite Muslims. Those in attendance said the violence overseas gives the perception that Sunnis and Shiites throughout the world are divided.
The group hoped the gathering will be a start in changing that perception and promoting peace and understanding.
