Arctic air from Canada swept through the region Saturday, bringing record-breaking temperatures to some areas of Long Island.
According to the National Weather Service, the mercury dropped to minus 14 degrees Fahrenheit at Gabreski Airport in Westhampton Beach, making it one of the coldest places on Long island.
?We got everything going and try to keep warm, stay inside as much as possible and hope that we don't have to go outside that much,? says Peter Hlavack, of Sheltair Avitation.
Despite the bone-chilling cold, adults and children alike were out skating and playing hockey on the frozen Westhampton Duck Pond for the first time in years.
The area between Westhampton Beach and Ridge often experiences the lowest temperatures on Long Island. It is a part of the Pine Barrens known as 'icy hollow'.
