With a multi-million dollar budget deficit, Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) Long Island Bus service could face dramatic cuts.
Long Island Bus President Neil Yellin says bus route cuts and layoffs are both on the table because the MTA has been forced to cover Nassau County's share. With a $5 million deficit, Yellin says the county has not decided what portion of the service it will pay for in 2007. MTA board member Mitch Pally says the county is contractually obligated to cover the deficit, while Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi's office maintains it is not the county's responsibility to pay for a deficit caused by an accident lawsuit.
Incoming MTA Chairman Lee Sander says he and the board will try to settle the budget issues with Nassau County within the next two weeks.
