The high price of gasoline has some Long Island boaters worried their summer will run aground.
The price for gasoline on the water is up to $3.99 a gallon. Chris Bailey, of Glen Head, said while boaters still go out on the water, they are taking shorter trips. Bailey said many fellow boaters will moor in the water and forgo a trip to Block Island due to the high gas prices. Captain Gary Cassidy with the Waterfront Center said typically on a Memorial Day weekend the harbor would be packed with powerboats but Saturday only two were out.
However, many boaters said they will bite the bullet and pay. John McGrane with the Oyster Bay Marine Center said, ?The price of maybe 50 cents more a gallon overall from a couple years ago is a small percentage in the whole picture of owning a boat. The time is short that you have in the summer.?
The high gas prices also mean higher prices for towing a boat said Mitch Kramer of Towboat U.S. On the flip side, Kramer said business is busier than usual, towing boats that have run out of gas.
