Long Beach police are warning people to not have "sunset parties" this weekend after one of them last week resulted in gunfire.
Teresa Powers says the parties advertised on social media that draw thousands to the sand are unfair to the residents who live in Long Beach.
As News 12 has reported, a party last weekend drew about 2,500 people. Police say there were illegal fireworks and as the crowd was breaking up gunfire erupted in the streets.
Sharon Hoffman, of Long Beach, lives in a building directly across from where the parties take place. She says the police are doing their best.
"But they're definitely making it known that they don't want it to happen so I would think that would be a deterrent to the kids," says Hoffman.
Police say the organizers normally promote the party on social media apps such as Snapchat and Instagram. As you saw first on News 12 Thursday, police say another party is planned for this weekend. Long Beach Police Commissioner Ron Walsh has this warning to partygoers.
"We are saying that if you think you're going to come down to the City of Long Beach and have a sunset party this weekend, you have another thing coming," says Walsh.
Police say you need a permit for any planned parties and that the boardwalk closes at midnight, so would-be partygoers should expect more police presence than ever this weekend.
"They could also expect that their cars will be towed when they park illegally," says Walsh. "They can expect to receive multiple vehicle and traffic summonses when they drive the way they were driving here last weekend."
There will be county police, state police, and MTA police patrolling the boardwalk this weekend.
