Locust Valley Central School District said in a letter that it will reverse its bathroom policy it adopted in October after the commissioner of the New York State Education Department intervened.
The policy mandated students use bathrooms and locker rooms that align with their biological sex and not gender identity.
The letter to school district families reads in part:
In accordance with the Commissioner’s directive, and absent an overriding administrative or judicial determination, the district must now follow the Commissioner’s interpretation of state law, which is that students may use a bathroom or locker room consistent with their gender identity. Please note that our gender-neutral bathrooms and gender-neutral locker room remain open and accessible to all students.
The district says it will pursue further legal counsel to ensure their actions are consistent with the law and the district’s values.
