It’s finally apple picking season on Long Island, and North Fork orchards are taking extra precautions to keep apple enthusiasts safe as they enjoy a beloved fall activity.
At Harbes Orchard in Riverhead, masks are required at all times for ages two and older. The exception to the rule is when customers are seated at socially distant picnic tables enjoying treats like apple cider doughnuts and kettle corn.
If you plan on visiting over the weekend, arrive early. Just like at restaurants, orchards have capacity limits. With Long Islanders eager to pick the best for pies and eating, some parking lots have filled up 15 minutes after opening!
If you don’t want to risk waiting, or have an even better chance of staying socially distant, go on a weekday! For the first time ever, Harbes Orchard is open Monday through Friday. The owners shared that some couples are taking a lunch break at the orchard and after virtual lessons, parents have brought their kids for a “field trip!”
Favorite activities like corn mazes are open too. Expect fewer people in at a time. Rides like the “Apple Express” are open, and drivers take time after each ride to sanitize cars.
In all the excitement if you forget sanitizer, don’t worry! Sanitizer stations have been installed throughout properties to stop the spread of germs.
