Long Island Cares says its inventory is at a low point right now, two to three times less than it would normally be.

Administrators with the food bank say they're short on items like meat, fresh produce, milk and eggs, due to USDA cuts that took place in March. They attribute this to 32 canceled deliveries by the USDA so far this year.

They say their food pantries are struggling to serve their communities as a result - with empty shelves of their own.

They're not alone.

Island Harvest Food Bank says the USDA decision has cost them $2 million in funding used to purchase local food for those in need.

News 12 reached out to the USDA for comment and is waiting to hear back.
