Amtrak's planned summer work at Penn Station promises to disrupt service for Long Island Rail Road riders, who are worried the plan won't include any improvements to better their commutes.
Amtrak owns and operates Penn Station, where a series of LIRR service disruptions and delays have originated in recent weeks.
Amtrak has not yet released the final details of its planned work, but officials told Newsday this week that so far the plans do not include any improvements to the aging signal system, which has snarled the commute in recent weeks.
Peter Haynes of the LIRR Commuters Campaign says the upcoming phase of the project is not going to include improvements to LIRR tracks, and says it could have a big impact on LIRR commuters.
"My concern is that it will affect LIRR commuters more than what they are thinking, that something may not go right, it stretches out longer than they planned," Haynes says.
Amtrak says further work on the tracks will continue through June of 2018, mostly on the weekends. A spokesperson tells News 12 that information on the impact to service and customers will be available once the final plan is released.
