MTA announces major weekend service changes, train suspensions

MTA officials say new projects planned over the next two years will improve Long Island Rail Road service on the East End.

One upgrade is a permanent second platform coming to the Hampton Bays station. As News 12 previously reported, a temporary one was installed for the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills.

The MTA also plans to make more room for trains to pass each other at the Amagansett station.

LIRR President Rob Free says that will create more space for riders.

“This will reduce the distance of single track from 27 miles down to 16 miles. Having all the single track meant we could not have an eastbound train east of Southampton and a westbound train west of Montauk at the same time. That will all change once these improvements are made,” he explained.

The MTA says they hope to begin the Amagansett construction in 2028.
