The Long Island Rail Road introduced a mobile app ticket program Thursday along the Port Washington branch.
The MTA eTix app allows commuters to buy daily, weekly or monthly tickets and eliminates the need for a paper ticket.
The eTix app also contains a feature that gives departure and arrival times at all stations. It also will send alerts if there are delays or cancellations.
Conductors are being taught to recognize the unique color coding and bar codes on the e-tickets for validation. The app is similar to what is already being used on NICE buses and New Jersey Transit.
The LIRR says the free mobile app is convenient, and will be available to all commuters on all branches of the railroad by the end of August.
The app is currently available for iPhones and Android devices.
