Golf fever is already sweeping through the region as the Ryder Cup heads to Long Island next month.
Nowhere is the excitement more intense than at Bethpage State Park, where eager golfers are lining up days in advance just to play a round at the legendary Bethpage Black course.
What looks like a cross between a campsite and a tailgate party has taken over the park’s parking lot. Tents, lawn chairs, coolers and even TVs are set up as players prepare for a round on the course, just weeks before it hosts one of golf’s most prestigious events.
“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said Nicholas Yandolino, of East Northport. “It’s so cool to be here, especially with the amount of people.”
“You’ve got the bleachers up. You get to feel almost like what the pros feel," says Philip DiPierdomenico, from Hampton Bays.
Some golfers have already been camped out for nearly 24 hours, with their tee times not expected until late the next morning.
Andrew Wolland, of Massapequa, laughed when asked where he was sleeping.
“In the car. Just roll the seat back and that’s it," he says.
Others came better prepared.
Kyle Baylous, of Shoreham, and his friends brought a full campsite setup — including a tent, coffee table and TV.
“We’ve got dinner set up, the tent set up here. The whole nine,” Baylous said.
Meanwhile, on Main Street in Farmingdale, the Ryder Cup trophy itself was on display — drawing fans to snap a picture with the coveted prize.
The tournament, which pits Team USA against Team Europe, returns stateside after a European victory in the last matchup.
Fans are hopeful that a home-field advantage will help Team USA reclaim the cup.
“It’s really exciting,” said Matt Smith, of Bay Shore. “It’s something I think Long Island is going to rally behind. It’s going to be a great environment, and it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
The 2025 Ryder Cup is scheduled for Sept. 23 through Sept. 28 at Bethpage Black.
News 12 will have full coverage of the tournament on air and online.
