The country's largest offshore wind farm could be built right off of Long Island.
LIPA has told News 12 that the utility's board is set to approve a plan to build a 90-megawatt, 15-turbine wind farm about 30 miles east of Montauk.
The promise is that the wind farm would produce enough energy to power nearly 50,000 homes.
The board will consider the move on Wednesday.
Power from the farm could reach Long Island customers by the end of 2022.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo praised the idea saying, "Next week marks another opportunity for this state to lead the nation in creating a stronger, more resilient energy system and protecting the environment for future generations."
