Police say a Lindenhurst gym teacher was arrested Sunday for criminal possession of anabolic steroids.

Investigators say Kevin Muscarello, of Sayville, was discovered with a large quantity of oxandrolone. He has been charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell.

According to court documents, the arrest came after Muscarello was pulled over yesterday on the Vanderbilt Parkway by Commack Road in Dix Hills at around 11 a.m.

The Lindenhurst School District says Muscarello is a high school gym teacher and a boys' varsity volleyball coach. He has been with the district for 11 years and had no prior criminal record when he was hired, the district says.

The district says that Muscarello will be "administratively reassigned" pending the outcome of the case. The district adds that it has no reason to believe the teacher distributed steroids to students.
