The Lighthouse Mission handed out fruit, vegetables and Thanksgiving turkeys to needy families in Patchogue on Saturday morning.

The Lighthouse Mission, a Long Island-based Christian ministry, runs a food bank every Saturday in a parking lot off Terry Street.

With Thanksgiving just five days away, the mission saw a spike in attendance this week.

Organizers say the level of need in the community is high, despite reports of an improving economy.
