Prosecutors accused Hauppauge teen Zachary Gibian of looking for a major life insurance payout during cross-examination in the samurai sword murder trial Friday.
Gibian has been imprisoned since February 2005, when police accused him of nearly decapitating his stepfather, Scott Nager. Despite a previous confession, Gibian now insists his mother is the real killer. According to prosecutors, the 19-year-old would become the sole beneficiary of a $2 million insurance policy if he successfully pins the murder on his mom. Gibian claims he confessed to the killing in order to protect his mom, but prosecutors say the teen had already picked out luxury cars he wanted from a magazine in anticipation of a big payday.
They also say Gibian had extra incentive after fighting with his stepfather that night because Nager wanted to throw him out of the house. Gibian appeared polite and calm throughout cross-examination.
