Hundreds of immigrants and immigration advocates on Long Island joined others nationwide Thursday in rallying for reform and against what they call the cruel policy of enforcement agents.
The group rallied in Hempstead to bring an end to raids conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The group says the often violent raids separate parents and children and tear families apart.
Others say illegal immigrants unfairly put a heavy burden on taxpayers. Pat Nicolosi, of the Elmont Civic Association, says children of illegal immigrants make up 50 percent of the school district.
The May Day rallies take on added significance this election year. Advocates say they?re hopeful comprehensive immigration reform will be realized once the next president is sworn in, no matter who it is.
An ICE spokesperson told News 12 Long Island the agency always tries to address the issue of stranded families, but says families rarely come forward.
