Traffic on several major Long Island roadways slowed to a crawl Friday due to the snowstorm.
Several vehicles were involved in a pileup crash that closed eastbound lanes on the Long Island Expressway near Exit 40 earlier. All lanes were later reopened, but the highway was backed up for hours.
It's unclear if anyone was injured in the crash, or how many vehicles were involved.
State police also closed the Northern State Parkway by Exit 38 in Plainview due to the extremely slippery conditions. Several accidents and spinouts were reported in the area. Traffic was at a virtual standstill earlier on the parkway, and News 12's Erin Colton was among those caught in the congestion.
Another accident on the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway involved an overturned truck and a taxi cab. That crash snarled traffic in the southbound lanes near Exit 6, but lanes were later reopened.
Exact figures weren't yet available, but police in both Nassau and Suffolk reported a higher-than-normal number of traffic accidents Friday from the storm.
Drivers are being urged to use caution and give themselves extra travel time in the wake of the storm.
Roads are expected to be extremely slippery throughout the weekend, because refreezing will occur as overnight temperatures drop.
