For 30 years, Seaford native Liberty DeVitto was the driving force behind Billy Joel's music.
News 12's Elisa DiStefano met the world famous drummer at his bandmate Richie Cannata’s Cove City Sound Studios in Glen Cove to talk about his new memoir "Liberty: Life, Billy and the Pursuit of Happiness."
"I never took drum lessons so how did I get to play with one of the biggest artists ever, Billy Joel, and that's what the book does, it talks you through my family, me growing up and all the roads I had to take to get to where I got and some of those roads were very, very dark," he says.
Liberty writes about his big break-up with Billy and their make-up earlier this year. Billy wrote the book's foreword.
The book also traces Liberty's musical journey from his first bands on Long Island, to reuniting with Richie Cannata and Russell Javors in the Lords of 52nd Street.
