Water quality has improved a little bit this week, with water temperatures in the 70s and some bay areas approaching 80 degrees.
Quality on Long Island is currently considered good to fair.
Out of 30 sites tested, 13 are ranked good with nine fair and eight poor.
Water quality is good by Jones Inlet, Fire Island Inlet, Shinnecock Inlet and the Peconic Estuaries. There is also good water on the North Shore by Port Jefferson Harbor, Mount Sinai and Mattituck.
In contrast, Moriches Bay is poor, with water being highly turbid due to harmful algal blooms and low levels of oxygen at night.
Peconic River and Meetinghouse Creek have also declined with poor water clarity, nocturnal anoxia, high levels of bacteria and high levels of algae.
Hempstead Harbor, Cold Spring Harbor, and Northport Harbor also have poor quality due to dense harmful algal blooms that caused low water clarity and low levels of dissolved oxygen at night, as well as elevated levels of fecal bacteria.
Fair conditions can be found on the East End in Sag Harbor with lower oxygen and water clarity and elevated levels of algae.
The same can be said for Central Great South Bay and a few spots on the North Shore, like Oyster Bay Harbor, Huntington, and Stony Brook.
As always, check with the county health departments and NYSDEC for more information on swimming and shell fishing.
