The EAC Network says it may lose $8 million in funding due to the new federal spending budget.
Seniors like Mamie Winfield from Hempstead get help with their home heating and cooling bills thanks to the EAC Network.
"It helps you a lot, especially in the winter months because of the cold weather and heating prices are sky high," she said.
The Garden City-based nonprofit has more than 100 programs, helping nearly 80,000 people a year with issues including health, safety and economic stability.
With the federal government's new spending budget, more than $1 trillion to safety net services like Medicaid and food stamps is being cut. As a result, the EAC Network says it may lose up to $8 million in funding.
"We help people who need assistance to get financial support for their heating and cooling systems and what we're seeing is the funding there is getting cut," said Neela Mukherjee Lockel, president and CEOP of the EAC Network.
Services that the EAC Network says they may see a reduction in because of federal cuts are its Meals on Wheels program, driving food to seniors on a daily basis in Nassau. Also facing potential cuts, a program to help children to find safe homes, and another helping defendants with mental health issues.
"We're worried about cuts for violence survivors, domestic violence programs and human trafficking response," said Mukherjee Lockel.
Right now, the EAC Network has not had to cut off services for any of its clients. Additional state and local funding may help offset some potential federal cuts.
