Suffolk District Attorney Tom Spota capped a three-month undercover investigation by seizing more than 100 assault weapons and arresting the two men who owned them.
Authorities say 46-year-old John Acompora, of West Islip, and 56-year-old Gregory Brozski were in possession of grenade launchers, Uzi?s, AK-47?s and other military-grade weapons. Officials found more than 50 weapons at Brozski?s Bayside, Queens apartment. According to investigators, the rest were kept in Acompora?s basement, garage and two unlocked backyard sheds.
Police say both suspects were arrested 10 years ago for firing automatic weapons in a wooded area in Farmingdale. Following that conviction, authorities say, neither man is allowed to own a single weapon. Spota says an investigation is ongoing into how the men acquired the guns and what they planned to do with them.
