Areas throughout Long Island are facing a shortage of volunteer firefighters.
In an effort to pump up the numbers of volunteers, departments across Long Island are lifting the firehouse doors and actively recruiting members this weekend.
The departments are using tax breaks, free college tuition and other incentives to entice would-be volunteers.
Long Island fire departments also want to get the word out that the recruits don't have to be in their 20s to volunteer.
