The state is planning to use technology developed by a Long Island company to crack down on underage drinking.
The company Intellicheck, based out of Melville, developed a new app that can pick out fake IDs.
The "Law ID" feature on the Intellicheck app allows law enforcement officers to scan a driver’s license and check federal, state and DMV records. It also helps officers determine if an ID is authentic.
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is the first agency in the nation to use it. The goal is to prevent underage drinking.
The app was put to the test at a July 30 concert at Jones Beach. DMV investigators confiscated 30 IDs, finding that 29 were fake.
Possessing a fraudulent license can result in a one-year revocation of a license.
The feature is only for sworn law enforcement officers.
Intellicheck also has a commercial version that can be used by establishments that sell alcohol.
