In his fifth State of the County address Wednesday, Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy touted the bipartisanship cooperation under his leadership, but warned residents there may be rough economic times ahead unless the county acts.
Levy said the state of the county remains strong despite budgetary concerns. He urged for action in the face of a $100 million budget shortfall. Levy said the shortfall is spurred by a slumping housing market and the weakening national economy.
The executive announced the creation of a bipartisan panel to deal with tax issues. "I will be asking legislators from both sides of the aisle to join me in developing an action plan to protect our taxpayers,? Levy said.
Levy also announced a 10-year plan to end homelessness in the county. He said the plan will include a homeless hotline number to help people on the streets and veterans.
Downtown revitalization is key, Levy said. He stated that redevelopment should go hand in hand with the creation of workforce housing. Expanding solar energy and providing better health care for residents were also on the agenda.
