He often graces the stage at Mulcahy's and he's been singing Billy Joel songs since high school. Now, the lead singer of Big Shot, a Billy Joel tribute band, will be touring with the Piano Man himself.
Mike DelGuidice says he started singing Billy Joel songs in Miller Place High School's vocal jazz band in the late 80s. Years later he started Big Shot on Long Island. After decades of dedication to Joel's music, DelGuidice was asked by Joel himself to join his upcoming European tour.
"'I need to talk to Mike' were his exact words," says DelGuidice. "And he said, 'I'd like to get you out on the road in the UK.'"
Last week, DelGuidice joined Joel on stage at surprise concert at the Paramount Theatre in Huntington.
"Looking over and seeing him play, I'm like, I can't believe I'm on stage with this guy," says DelGuidice. "This is mind boggling."
DelGuidice says singing Joel's music has helped not only his career but his family life. He says before the tribute band he was living in a trailer with his children. He says he is lucky to be able to thank Joel in person.
DeGuidice leaves for Joel's European tour Thursday.
