The lawyer for the driver accused of running down another motorist during a road rage incident in Long Beach painted a very different picture of the event in court Tuesday.
Nassau police say before 22-year-old Evan Potts struck Ian Sharrin Friday, the two were seen driving aggressively and arguing as they drove along Park Avenue. They arrived at the intersection of Park and National Boulevard, where police say Sharrin stopped his car, blocking the intersection, got out and ran toward Potts? car yelling. That?s when Potts hit Sharrin, according to authorities.
Potts? lawyer Stanley Kopilow says the two drivers had almost gotten into an accident and that his client was trying to get away from Sharrin. He says Sharrin waited for Potts in the intersection and cornered him.
?The only one who had road rage was Ian Sharrin,? Kopilow says. ?It's unfortunate that he died, but he came after Evan with blood in his eye. He chased him.?
Sharrin's family has issued a statement saying that the 34-year-old was a loving and devoted son and brother who was always willing to help people. The statement also says the family prays that justice will be served.
Potts? bail was lowered Tuesday to $250,000 cash, $500,000 bond. It had been set at $500,000 cash, $5 million bond.
