A Long Island assemblywoman is pushing legislation to study the Southern State Parkway in an effort to thwart fatal accidents and improve overall safety.
Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages (D - Valley Stream) says the study would look at all the signs, lighting, entrance and exit ramps along the entire roadway.
"We need to know if we need better signs, more lighting or a total redesign," says Solages.
The bill was originally introduced in 2013 and is currently in the transportation committee.
There have been more than 80 fatalities along the Southern State going back to 2007.
The state Department of Transportation says it has made significant safety improvements to the Southern State, and adds that it is a safe road for rule-abiding drivers.
