Chairman Kevin Law was voted in as the new president and chief executive officer of the Long Island Power Authority, replacing Richard Kessel Tuesday. Immediately after being voted in, Law, who officially starts on Monday, faced pressure from environmentalists to fire up renewable energy projects. In August, Law pulled the plug on an offshore wind farm near Jones Beach because of its $700 million price tag. Still, the new man in charge said renewable energy "is something that I'm going to be focusing on right away."Citizens Campaign for the Environment's Adrienne Esposito said, "We should be looking at offshore wind, we need to be looking at on-land based wind. We really need to roll up our sleeves and start this process again."At the same time, Assemblyman Andrew Raia (R-East Northport) called on LIPA to repower aging power plants, like the one in Northport. Raia said the plant can be operated on natural gas, which he said is slightly more expensive, but worth it because of the clean air benefits.Though energized, Law preached some degree of patience."We can't do everything at once," he said. "We can't do a re-powering project, we can't do a wind project and do an energy efficiency project all at the same time because everybody's rates are going through the roof."
