A jury failed to reach a verdict Monday about whether an East Meadow priest and church leaders were negligent in protecting children from a pedophile.
Jurors requested the court read back testimony from the church business manager. In the testimony, the business manager had said the Rev. Thomas Haggerty knew the man in question had boundary issues. Two victims of Matthew Maiello, who served time for raping four teens while he was youth minister at St. Raphael's Church in East Meadow, filed the suit. The Diocese of Rockville Centre, St. Raphael's Church and Rev. Thomas Haggerty are the defendants. The plaintiffs are seeking $150 million from the diocese and parish.
An attorney for the church argues Maiello went to great lengths to hide his wrongdoings, and the church is not responsible.
The jury will enter its fifth day of deliberations Tuesday.
