A West Babylon man who stole an SUV, drove high and crashed into a police car was sentenced Thursday.
Louis Mancini will spend the maximum of 10 years in state prison after he pleaded guilty to driving while impaired by drugs and other charges.
The 30-year-old had fentanyl and anxiety medication in his system when he lost control of a stolen SUV at 85 mph along Straight Path in March and crashed head-on into a police cruiser.
The crash left Suffolk Officer Donald Dillion with a shattered pelvis, fractured hip and broken leg. He spent a month in the hospital and weeks recovering afterward. Dillon attended the sentencing and was surrounded by fellow police officers.
In court, Mancini apologized and asked for leniency in the sentencing, but Judge Fernando Camacho fired back, calling him a drug addict and a thief. He also called Dillon a hero and a class act.
As Mancini was being led away, he remarked to the judge if he was "happy now."
Dillon said in response to the remarks, "It just goes to who his true character is."
Because Mancini pleaded guilty, he cannot appeal. His court-appointed attorney says his client felt remorseful and wanted to get his life back on track.
