A Suffolk teen appeared in court today on charges of driving while ability impaired by drugs after he allegedly struck and killed a Commack woman with his SUV yesterday.

Police say 63-year-old Herta Palma was driving her car on New Year's Eve when she was struck at the intersection of Hauppauge and Commack roads just before 3:30 p.m. Palma was taken to Huntington Hospital, where she died.

Prosecutors say 19-year-old James Murphy, the driver of the other car, admitted he was under the influence of nitrous oxide, Xanax and hash oil. He also allegedly admitted he was looking down at his phone when the accident happened.

Results from Murphy's toxicology report were not available at today's arraignment, where the judge set his bond at $450,000. Murphy is due back in court Jan. 6.
