A New York woman is celebrating her first cancer-free scan in years, as well as her 25th birthday.
Elyssa Bourne was diagnosed with sarcoma, a rare type of cancer in the soft tissue or bones first in 2012.
"It's been a journey, I've been dealing with cancer for almost half my life," Bourne says.
She battled cancer as a teenager, a college student, a graduate student and afterwards.
Bourne says she was in so much pain that she couldn't even get into bed. She says she was also on crutches before having a hip replacement and femur resection.
Northwell Health's Dr. Howard Goodman, who did Bourne's most recent surgery, says he is inspired by her positive attitude.
"She had a big surgery, but she wanted to walk immediately afterwards," Goodman says. "She was walking with pain beforehand, now even with a limo or no limp, she's just happy to get moving without pain."
Bourne says she is extremely grateful for the little things like being able to walk by herself.
