With the weather heating up, Islip Town lawmakers spoke about pool safety at the Bay Shore YMCA Tuesday.
Officials say drowning is the second highest cause of accidental death in people between 5 and 44 years old.
"Parental supervision and swimming with a lifeguard is important whether they are a good swimmer or not...There is no substitute for that," says YMCA head lifeguard Maureen Kiernan.
The YMCA says 75 percent of all drownings take place in residential pools. According to lifeguard officials, it takes just 20 seconds for a person to submerge and drown.
A 5-year-old Farmingville girl drowned during a block party in Islip just last week.
