The Islip Town Board unanimously passed a $6 million bond resolution to clean up Roberto Clemente Park in Brentwood, where tons of asbestos-laden debris was found earlier this month.

According to Islip Town Councilman Anthonty Senft, the remediation process will not start until the Suffolk district attorney authorizes it. Then, a plan can be developed with the help of environmental experts, officials and the Department of Labor.

The board also removed Thomas Datre from his position as chairman of the town plumbers' examining board. As News 12 has reported, the town has named Datre's company, Day Tree at Cortland Square, in connection with the ongoing parks scandal.

Datre has denied any knowledge of illegal dumping and his attorney has implored officials with evidence against the company to come forward.

Some residents believe the illegal dumping discoveries are part of a larger cover-up by town officials.

"I call for the immediate resignation of Councilman Senft, the board liaison to the Parks Department, for failing to respond to the residents' calls for an explanation," said George Hafele, an Islip resident.

An attorney for the Datres says his clients will sue the town of Islip and the deputy town attorney for defamation in a suit that seeks $50 million in damages.
