The Town of Islip is defending itself against claims it's not doing enough to deal with a toxic dumping scandal.

At a press conference Friday, Town Council members said they've hired an environmental company to test the soil at all town parks.

The Suffolk DA has confirmed there are three sites contaminated with asbestos, including Roberto Clemente Park in Brentwood. He says his investigators were told by several people that they had complained to the town in the past about questionable dumping without any response.

The Town of Islip says a state Department of Environmental Conservation investigation of Roberto Clemente Park in January showed no contamination. However, the parks commissioner has resigned over the controversy.

News 12 Long Island has learned at least two other locations are being investigated for possible contaminants. The DA raided a private dump site this week on Route 111 in Central Islip that was thought to be the source of the contaminated soil. Investigators also decided to test dirt used in the construction of a veterans' housing project in the Village of Islandia.

Islip board members say they are trying to act as quickly as possible.

Thursday night, News 12 Long Island learned asbestos has turned up at a PAL athletic field in Central Islip.

The Suffolk DA won't comment on how many sites may have been used for illegal dumping or what town officials did or didn't know about that dumping. The town says there is no threat of asbestos contamination in the air around the parks.
