A Long Island food pantry is helping families make ends meet this summer.

The Island Harvest Food Bank is distributing 25,000 pounds of food across the Island.

The distribution will help stock food pantry shelves during the summer when food demand increases by 10-15 percent.

During the school year, 90,000 children on Long Island eat breakfast and lunch at school through subsidized programs.  

“It's sad, but I am very happy that the food is being supplied and it is getting where it needs to go," said Nassau Executive Laura Curran.

Island Harvest runs the Summer Food Service Program, which feeds about 8,000 children at 86 different sites across the Island all summer long.

Money for the Summer Food Service Program comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
