An Irish step dance group on Long Island’s East End is using their talent to help animals in need.

This St. Patrick’s Day, members of Gaelic Grooves North Fork stopped by the News 12 studio -- turning the lobby into a mini Irish step dance floor while sharing the mission behind their performances. But for these young dancers, it’s about more than just mastering the steps.

Payton Scudder, 15, has been Irish dancing since she was four and a half years old. Emily Gallagher, 8, is newer to the art form, starting lessons just this past December. Together, they’re part of a group dedicated to helping animals find loving homes.

The Mattituck-based dance group performs across Long Island to raise money for the animal rescue organization North Fork Country Kids.

“We fundraise for the animals -- we fundraise to give them homes. That’s our big thing,” said Scudder. The effort is called “Stepping for Paws,” combining the dancers’ love of Irish step with their passion for helping animals.

The dancers recently performed in the 20th annual Cutchogue St. Patrick’s Day Parade, sharing both their talent and their cause with the community.

“I think it’s great,” said Scudder. “It’s two in one -- you get to dance and do what you love and also support the animals across Long Island.” Gallagher agrees. “I love animals, I love dancing… what could be better?” she said.

So far, the group has raised about $3,500 for the rescue organization and plans to continue performing to help even more animals find homes.
