A group of private investors recently revealed plans to build a $1 billion natural gas terminal of the shores of Long Beach.

The proposed 53-acre man-made island would be located 13.5 miles off the coast and would have four large tanks where liquid natural gas would be stored. The gas would then flow into a pipeline that serves Long Island and the tri-state area.

Supporters say the off-shore supply of gas would reduce costs for the consumer. However, many area residents and environmental groups are questioning the impact the facility would have on the fishing industry, marine life and ocean environment. If approved, the company estimates the terminal would be operational in 2010.
