Immigrant advocates protested in Patchogue Wednesday to demand that Suffolk Republicans cancel the appearance of Donald Trump so close to the site of a deadly hate crime.
The protest was held on Railroad Avenue, across the street from the Emporium, where Trump is scheduled to speak at a fundraiser on Thursday.
It was on this block that an Ecuadorian immigrant was stabbed and killed in what the advocates say was a climate of hate back then. They say it is offensive that Trump will be speaking at the Republican fundraiser because of his anti-immigrant remarks.
"He does not belong here," said Rev. Allan Ramirez. "This is not a reality show. This is not a freaking game. These are real people, human beings with flesh and blood, and they do not deserve to be treated like animals. We are here to demand some decency of the Republican Party and stop this madness."
Suffolk Republican Chairman John J. LaValle said he will not cancel the event. In fact, he said it was a Republican fundraiser that was scheduled two months ago and all of the candidates were invited to speak.
