An Air Force veteran from Huntington received a special Memorial Day gift from Congressman Steve Israel (D-Huntington) Monday.
Michael Colamonico?s B-17 plane was shot down over France in 1943, and he was held as a prisoner of war for a year and a half. He recently lost all of his medals and honors when his overseas cap was misplaced. Colamonico, who rides in Huntington?s Memorial Day parade each year, says his medals represented his overseas experiences and that he felt like he has lost something special.
Israel presented Colamonico with all his lost medals and a flag that flew above the Capitol. Colamonico says his Silver Wings are one of the most precious to him, and adds he?ll make sure to keep his medals safe.
