Town of Huntington officials are calling on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to ensure that his proposed overhaul of LIPA doesn't hurt taxpayers.
LIPA pays property taxes on four power plants, including one in Northport. The utility is challenging the property tax assessment in court, and if LIPA wins, the local school district will face a major tax hike.
LIPA officials say the plants are over-assessed and say they want to reduce their tax burden by 90 percent. LIPA says 15 percent of ratepayers' bills goes toward paying property taxes for its power plants.
Town officials hope Cuomo will address the tax assessment issue in his plan to restructure the utility. His legislation is scheduled for a vote on June 20.
