A Bay Shore resident has been charged with assault after stabbing a man in the basement of an Amityville church on Friday night, according to police.

Investigators say Daniel Escobar, 33, stabbed the victim’s neck during a meeting inside First United Methodist Church at 24 Broadway around 8:30 p.m.

The reason for the meeting is not currently known.

Escobar fled the scene following the attack and the 65-year-old victim was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Police say Escobar was located on Ackerson Boulevard in Bay Shore and arrested at 10:22 p.m.

He was held overnight and is scheduled to be arraigned at the First District Court in Islip on Saturday.
