Workers have completed the restoration of the Huntington Lighthouse and now it's set to reopen for the first time in about two years.
Several years ago it was discovered that the lighthouse's foundation was crumbling and something had to be done to save the harbor's guiding light. With $1 million raised through fundraising and grants, engineers and marine construction crews were able to restore the 106-year-old foundation on the lighthouse.
"It was a long, involved task," says Pam Setchell, president of the Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society. "It involved shoring up the foundation, moving boulders, putting them back."
There's still some work to be done on the inside of the lighthouse, such as replacing windows from 1912.
"When they look back in the history books and they see the outcome I think they will be surprised by the success of it," says Frank Scobbo, of the Scobbo Foundation.
The lighthouse is set to open to tours and outdoor concerts on the water starting July 15. Boaters are invited to pull up, drop anchor and listen.
