? Police are searching for the gunman who fired shots at William Floyd High School Friday evening, injuring a teenage boy.
The incident occurred at around 8 p.m. following a basketball game between William Floyd and Mercy in Riverhead. Police say a 14-year-old boy was shot in the leg, but did not suffer life-threatening injuries. According to school officials, bystanders helped the victim inside after the shooting. He was then taken to Stony Brook University Hospital.
The victim?s mother, Melissa Houstin, says her son is expected to undergo surgery to remove a bullet from his lower leg.
Witnesses say the gunshots were fired after a fight broke out between two gangs. Amateur video caught the incident on camera. That footage shows the fighting that preceded the shots, followed by the scrambling of the crowd.
School officials say they hope the footage from two security cameras installed outside the school will help police identify the gunman.
?We've been in touch with the Suffolk Police Department, and we're going to be looking at the entire security operation to see what we can do to prevent this from ever happening again," says School Superintendent Dr. Paul Casciano.
